Study Report on Policy, Government Programs & Budget for Agroecology Promotion in Nepal

Agroecology applies ecological principles to farming to promote sustainability, resilience, and food security while addressing challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising hunger. Although practiced by millions of farmers worldwide, it remains underfunded and receives limited policy support. This assessment by AAI Nepal examined national agricultural and climate policies, budgets, and government initiatives related to agroecology and the organic transition, complemented by consultations with farming communities. The study found that Nepali farmers are actively practicing agroecology to adapt to climate change despite limited government support, highlighting the need for stronger policy and financial commitment in a country where agriculture is central to livelihoods and the national economy. Contributors to this study include Dr. Krishna Prasad Paudel, Dr. Sujata Tamang, Sindrela Dewan, Sarda Thapa, and Dipesh Nepal. Sarda Thapa and Dipesh Nepal are also the co-founders of Chhaharee Farm, whose practical experience and leadership in agroecology significantly strengthened the research. The study was further enriched through the active participation and collaboration of farmer communities, municipalities, and Karnali Province.
